Perfume and personal scent
Okay, we’re not going to lie to you, there are no magic recipes. Or rather, there are, but we won’t give them to you before the end of the article 😉 because this question is really worth discussing. Choosing a new fragrance for a man is a difficult task. This is because choosing someone’s perfume in general is very delicate. A person’s scent is something deeply intimate and linked to their identity. We sometimes talk about a “signature perfume”, which is the perfume that a person will become attached to for many years, and that will become for those around him both a scent that announces him and a powerful memory of his presence.
Beyond the perfume’s “signature” character, it is also an intimate attribute of a man (or a woman). Smell is a powerful element in our sensual/sexual lives. Have you ever had a crush on someone but been disturbed by their scent? (We’re talking about smelling their scent in a very intimate setting. If they are generally unhygienic, we understand that this could be a problem). Of all our senses, smell is the one most powerfully linked to emotions, memories, and instinct. That’s why smelling the perfume of someone you love will disturb you more than seeing it in a photo – their presence is made tangible by their scent. This is also where the expression “I can’t smell it” comes from. Someone’s natural smell (or lack of it!) can instinctively put you off.

The marketing of perfume
Generally speaking, when you’re a man (in the West), you’ll often find yourself wearing green, woody, aromatic, or even oriental (for the more adventurous) perfumes. The gender-based marketing of fragrances since the industrialization of the perfume industry, which was once a craft, has ended up simplifying the approach to scents for all the world’s consumers. On the one hand, you have women’s fragrances that smell like sugar, fruit, or flowers. And on the other, men’s fragrances that smell of nature (wood, grass, sea) or sex. Yet, in the Middle East, for instance, men like to wear pungent rose scents.
Moreover, perfume was originally used by men and women for religious, hygienic (or not, like hiding the smell of a lack of a bath), or ceremonial reasons without gender stigma. But nowadays, perfume is part of the cosmetics world, and it’s often futile to try get men interested. As a result, women buy most men’s perfumes for their fathers, boyfriends, husbands, etc.

Instead of choosing a new perfume for a man, it’s better to let the recipient make a free choice without any preconceived notions about marketing. Perfume is an intimate luxury, and what we call “self-care” (taking care of oneself, both physically and spiritually) is an imperative that goes beyond gender! It’s a pleasure to rediscover the primary scents of natural ingredients, and to let yourself be guided more by your tastes than by a brand, an advertising concept, or a muse.

Our perfumers can also suggest ingredients to you, based on his or her favourite perfume. It’s up to you!
